Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) rates have been steadily increasing over the last two decades. Currently, undiagnosed OSA affects nearly 25-33% of the population. These patients are at greater risk of having a respiratory compromise event during their hospital stay requiring a rapid response, code blue, and/or ICU transfer. Furthermore, OSA exacerbates many other serious conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and strokes making the untreated OSA patient more likely to be readmitted within the 30 day window repeatedly. Diagnosing, monitoring, and treating these patients appropriately can decrease the risk to the hospital, save lives, and money.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discusss how to assess patients for OSA
  • Identify methods of how to monitor suspected OSA patients
  • Analze strategies for how to protect the hospital, and decrease losses to reimbursement
