Risk Management and Quality, Collaborating to Reduce Preventable Harm

FSHRMPS is pleased to announce that Kathryn Wire, Executive Director of the Center for Patient Safety will deliver the opening keynote address for our 2020 Annual Meeting & Education Conference.  Risk Management and Quality Improvement Professionals have become very familiar with the reference to “Patient Safety Culture”, but what does that really mean?  What is the relationship between Patient Safety Culture and Preventable Harm?  This opening keynote will answer both questions and will explain how to improve inter-level communication and awareness of how risk events impact quality patient outcomes. The session will explore how to use what we learn from the risk management investigation of errors to focus on preventative tactics and quality-driven process improvements.  Collaboration between risk management and quality improvement departments can drive a culture change from traditional silos into a strong, solution-oriented partnership for improving outcomes at the enterprise level.  The presentation will include proactive strategies for dealing with complicated technical and adaptive situations and conceptualizing safety and reliability as a state of mind that guides professional teamwork actions and improves outcomes.

Safety From the Patient’s Perspective: The Importance of Care, Communication, and Compassion

Brian Boyle will share a personal and emotional story of his fight back from near death after a horrific automobile accident. Brian's story is about transforming a tragedy into a triumph, but it’s also about the universal ability that we all have to set goals and accomplish them. When a challenge is presented to us, we do our best to overcome whatever the situation is, and as a result, we learn something about ourselves through the process that makes us stronger. This closing session will provide vital information from the patient’s perspective to help caregivers gain valuable insight into the motivational role that communication has between the healthcare provider, the patient, and the patient's family. Join Brian as we explore the nuances of his hospital experience and answer questions that will have us reflecting upon our own practice, policies and leadership capabilities.
