This presentation will describe the background of the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (PSQIA) and the purpose of a Patient Safety Organization. We will describe different types of PSOs and mention what the recent hospital survey performed by the OIG revealed. Attendees will receive a short introduction to key terms, such as Patient Safety Event System (PSES) and Patient Safety Work Products (PSWPs) and hear about some specific examples where the PSO was valuable to an organization. Finally, we will discuss some of the recent challenges that have occurred in different state courts and remedies available.
